Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, a large and diverse group of organisms that exist as single cells or cell clusters.
Microbiology is concerned with: living cells and how they work, microorganisms, an important class of cells capable of free-living existence, microbial diversity, what microbes do: in the world at large, in human society, in our own bodies, as well as in the bodies of animals and plants.
Microbiology is a basic biological science. An understanding of the biology of higher organisms, such as humans, depends on a thorough knowledge of microbiology.
